When Skull and Bones was first introduced to the general public in 2017, it was little more than a fight to the death game, only with ships. And although in principle she looked quite good, she was definitely missing something. But when Ubisoft showed the game again, already at the E3 press conference in 2018, it became obvious how much content was added.

Now Skull and Bones is a whole world that people who play it can share among themselves. Because of this, it strongly resembles Destiny with boats or the Sea of ‚Äč‚ÄčThieves.

The pirate simulator, inspired by Assassin’s Creed, but dedicated to the events in the Indian Ocean, instead of the Caribbean from Black Flag, will be released on PC and consoles in hopefully 2021. Therefore, below we will tell you everything that is known about Skull and Bones at the moment.

RELEASE DATE

There is no exact release date for Skull and Bones yet. It is only known that the release is scheduled for 2021. This means that we will not be able to play Skull and Bones for a long time. Given the series of postponements of projects due to the pandemic, we would not be surprised if the game is released at the very end of 2021 or even postponed until 2022.

Initially, the release was planned for 2018, but after E3 in 2018, when the last show took place, it became known that the release date had been postponed. But this is also good. After the first demonstration of gameplay at E3 in 2017, the game has changed a lot with additional content and new mechanics. Apparently, Ubisoft is not wasting time.

The fact that the release has been delayed is also good because Ubisoft is planning public beta tests. This means that anyone can get a chance to play Skull and Bones before release. You can sign up for the beta through the official website of the game. Tests are planned for all platforms.

GAMEPLAY

To put it bluntly, Skull and Bones’ gameplay is all about capturing and destroying other ships. All the subtleties are in why and why to attack the next victim. The richer and stronger you become, the greater your power. The trailer contains many references to the importance of getting to the very top of the food chain.

The ship controls are almost the same as in Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag. You sail across the endless sea and then shoot your enemies with a cannon. There are several types of shells available, each suitable for different purposes, causing damage or incapacitating the enemy.

Each ship can be customized by assigning special abilities to them. For example, one can have a cannon that fires eight shells at once in one volley, or without waiting for the ability to roll back.

Apparently, it will be possible to sail in different ways too. We saw in the demo that players will be able to join different factions and set sails to increase speed, defense or maneuverability.

Nevertheless, the main idea is that as the game progresses, you can team up with other pirate crews and monitor the balance of power in order to attack really dangerous opponents, for defeating them you will receive real treasures. If you plan to attack large ships, then you definitely cannot do without comrades, even if you have pumped your team to the maximum.

CUSTOMIZATION

Skulls & Bones has tremendous opportunities for customization of ships. And, apparently, it affects not only their appearance, but also their abilities. In the trailer, we were shown that players will be able to change sails, arm ships, and choose the main character. And all this is only in the demo video. Therefore, it makes sense to expect more opportunities from the final version of the game.

The gameplay will be highly dependent on the words of the predictor, so you will have to quickly adapt to changing weather conditions. You can find out the forecast before starting the game, and then build your strategy. For example, the presence of a strong wind means not only a large number of merchant ships available for robbery, but also high competition in the hunt for them. So far, we are not sure how this is connected, we are just telling what was in the demo. In advance, the advisor can be asked not only about weather conditions, but also trade routes.

It should be noted that it is not necessary to be on the ship all the time. You can get off it and visit your own island. Apparently, there will also be something to do there.

WAS THE GAME RESTARTED?

To be honest, all of the above may not be relevant. According to some reports, the development of the game was delayed due to the fact that it was relaunched. The authors simply could not fit Skull and Bones into the concept of Ubisoft’s open-world games, so it was decided to start from scratch using some of the existing developments.

In addition, according to renowned journalist and insider Jason Schreier, the creative director left the team that deals with Skull and Bones in 2018, and now the game is headed by the new head of development, Elizabeth Pellen (known for the scripts for XIII and Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow ), is heading in a new direction.

As far as we know now (this is not official information), Skull and Bones will become not so much a familiar MMO action game as a service game: with a greater emphasis on player interaction, regular updates, possibly with a development system in the form of seasons with battle passes. The closest analogue is Fortnite, and we wouldn’t be surprised if Ubisoft makes Skull and Bones free, capitalizing on microtransactions.

Most likely, game makers will not cancel the versions for PS4 and Xbox One: the new generation has not yet developed in full force, and due to the shortage of consoles, many users are forced to play on old consoles, and Ubisoft will definitely not cut off such a large base of gamers.
